The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act, or FACTA) was passed as an amendment to the Fair Credit Reporting Act in December 2003. This Act provides new rights and resources for consumers to access their credit report in order to help you correct credit errors, and to counteract credit fraud and identity theft.
Under FACTA, you have the right to obtain one free copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, once every 12 months. These three agencies have collaboratively established a website, toll-free phone number, and mailing address in order to provide you with a free annual credit report. Your free report is available through www.annualcreditreport.com, by calling 1-877-322-8228, or by mailing a completed request form to: Annual Credit Report Request Service, PO Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281.
